Sothys New Zealand Biennial Convention 2018

24 September 2018

Sothys New Zealand 6th Convention and Awards
21st – 23rd September 2018, Wellington

The Sothys Convention every two years has fast become a valued and well attended tradition within our loyal Sothys family. The most recent addition held at the central location of Intercontinental Hotel in Wellington had a certain weight of expectation following on from previous successful events across the country.

With very good attendance from clinics from all over the country, the stage was set for a great weekend which has always been about the chance for Clinic owners and Managers to socialise and share ideas and experiences and celebrate the two years leading up to this point.

The weekend began on Friday afternoon by boarding a coach to a mystery destination, much to the delight of everyone we pulled into the Weta Workshop in the Miramar based studios where The Lord of The Rings Trilogy and many other Blockbuster movies have been created. The two-and-a-half-hour tour was guided by one of the special effects make-up artists who was very entertaining and insightful on how complex movies are created. The tour finished with a make-up special effects demonstration with one of group to show off the mastery and reality they can create. It was an incredible experience that gave us a new appreciation for what Weta Workshop and the hundreds of people that work there have achieved since the Lord of the Rings.

Friday evening was a fun evening to catch up with old friends and meet new, a themed dinner of ‘Off to the Races’ gave everyone the chance to dress up and enjoy the entertainment which involved a team quiz and race, let’s just say it brought out everyone’s competitive spirit and humour and certainly set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

This Conference had special significance for the de Spa team and clients and none more than Anne-Marie as it was 30 years ago that de Spa Cosmetics was incorporated to exclusively represent Sothys in New Zealand, one of the very first professional product lines to enter the country following the Governments deregulation of the Import laws. To acknowledge this achievement, Anne-Marie called up all the clients in order of when they first started with Sothys, with the many of the ‘originals’ still working with the brand, some going all the way back to 1988 when Sothys was introduced to New Zealand. This was a very sentimental and for many an emotional moment to reflect on a special history and bond that is so strong and many ways unique to the industry.

Saturday was a packed agenda including many new product launches, technical workshops, practical demos and Guest Speakers, Sandi and Jeffrey Daley, the Australian Sothys Agents who have an equally impressive history, having represented Sothys for 37 years and counting.

The Conference agenda finished with a make-up competition where everyone was split into smaller groups and asked to create a certain ‘look’ using the new Sothys Spring/Summer Seasonal make up collection, this continued to fuel the competitive spirit which made for a very tough job for the judging panel, especially with prizes and honour at stake.

The conference concluded on Saturday night with a cocktail dinner and Awards celebration, which has become a conference tradition and the opportunity for everyone to enjoy themselves and celebrate with good company over great food and wine. Several award categories were presented and some anniversary recognition awards for the special efforts of some who have demonstrated extraordinary service to the Sothys brand.

Following the awards, a very touching short pre-recorded video of Sothys Owner Mr Bernard Mas, congratulating Anne-Marie for her devotion and friendship over the last 30 years and paying tribute to the amazing legacy she has created in New Zealand. This was tearful moment for her and indeed many others as it is a rare appearance for the man who has inspired so many and has a special love for New Zealand.

The evening is never complete without some great live music and this year, a young talented band called Jamie and The Gents had everyone up dancing and singing, which also brought out some interesting dance battles….. we really are a competitive bunch!

The feedback and congratulations from those that attended confirmed to the de Spa team that this had been a very special and memorable weekend that set a new benchmark for this biennial event.
